API, short for American Petroleum Institute, was founded in 1919 and is the first commercial level business association in the United States. Its purpose is to connect various sectors of the petroleum industry. With the development of the petroleum industry, the number of petroleum equipment manufacturers is increasing, and the requirements for equipment standardization and safety in oil fields are also increasing. Therefore, in 1923, the first mass industry standardization organization, the Standardization Department, was established within API, later translated as API Production Department.

The first batch of API standards was published in 1924, and then increased year by year, forming the first bound edition in 1949. API has published numerous technical materials to date, including official publications such as Standard (Std), Specification (Spec), Recommended Practice (RP), API Bulletin (Bull), and Special Publication (Pub SP). These standards, notifications, and recommended practices include the following: (1) belts; (2) Marine structure; (3) Cable drilling tools; (4) Derrick and bracket; (5) Pipeline; (6) Valves and wellhead equipment; (7) Rotating drilling equipment; (8) Upgrade equipment; (9) Steel wire rope; (10) Oil well cement; (11) Oil extraction equipment; (12) Storage tank; (13) Drilling fluid; (14) Offshore safety and pollution prevention; (15) Plastic pipe; (16) Oil well control system; (17) Shallow water oil extraction system.
